An Experimental Method to Determine the Measurement Error of Reference Electrodes within Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Reference electrodes (REs) play a crucial role in the accurate assessment and control of battery potentials, but their confidence is overestimated. Researchers have tracked source error to RE design that blocks lithium-ion path between anode cathode. These errors or potential deviations are mostly modeled less-frequently estimated after observing Li plating post-mortem. This first study showcase an experimental method allows more precise quantification in-operando RE. The key idea relate error-affected reference unaffected quantity, such as cell dilatation. Although our setups special, this approach can also be applied different REs. Using presented method, we provoked NMC811/graphite pouch cells determined deviation perforated 12 mV under fast charging conditions.
